I’M BEGGING YOU
From Ed Driscoll.
PLAYING IT DOWN
Here’s the WaPo lede:
Conservative protesters by the tens of thousands crowded outside the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, a massive demonstration aimed at stopping what organizers called the over-expansion of the federal government under the Obama administration.
Tens of thousands? Technically accurate, but…
CABBING IT HOME
Calling from a taxi on the way back home, Stacy McCain said:
On our way out we spoke to Judith Knapp and her granddaughter Savannah Jackson, and they are from Baltimore. They were both wearing t-shirts that said American Patriot. I stopped and talked to them. Knapp said, “I’m not going to put her in debt, that’s my point.” And Jackson said, “Oh yeah!” to “are you a Beck fan?” after the subject of Cass Sunstein came up. “You wouldn’t believe what it’s like in the schools,” the indoctrination before and after the election, she added.
Plus this quip from Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), “You have redefined gridlock in Washington.”
BUT WHERE ARE THE HOT UNDERAGE GIRLS?
Courtesy of JeffDubya on Twitter.
CORRECTION
It’s ABC (TV, radio? Not sure.) that pegged the crowd at two million, not CNN. Official estimate is 1.5 — but those numbers always sound inflated. Settle for a million and call it a damn fine day.
LIVE FROM THE MALL
Mike Pence again, addressing the crowd: “After years of fighting runaway government on this hill, you people look like the cavalry to me.” And: “I believe we are on the verge of a great American awakening.”
HERE IT COMES
Stacy was back on the phone, telling me about radio host Mason Weaver’s speech — “I came here because I thought you might want to hear a black man speak without a teleprompter” — and then Ron Paul stepped onto the stage.
The crowd went so wild, I couldn’t hear Stacy anymore.
CORRECTION: It was a mere rumor of Paul then drove’em wild.
COMMENTING IT IN
“Gunboy3″ writes:
I arrived at Freedom Plaza around 9:30 and the place was well stocked. We started marching at 10 towards the Capitol but it was hard to tell just how big the crowd was while amidst it. I got to the West Lawn which was covered with folks and their signs, and turning to look up Pennsylvania avenue, I was heartened to see a stream of marchers still flowing. I don’t know what a million people look like, and I would be surprised if it was anywhere near that, but we can leave that to others to argue. I thought it was an impressive turnout…..I wonder how the WAPO will cover it…front page or Metro section?
Good question.
EMAILING IT IN
No photos this time, but Barbara says, “Reports roads closed marchers streaming from capital to washington monument.”
Anyone know anything about this?
BEST YET?
From TwitPic, via Capitalist Coffee.
PHONING IT IN
Stacy McCain just called in with a bunch more protest signs spotted on The Mall:
Congress are you foolish enough to bet against our vote in 2010?
If you’re not outraged you’re not paying taxes.
Obamanomics – our dollars, no sense, trickle up poverty.
2009 Intolerable Acts – Cap & Trade, Bailouts, Obamacare.
Stace also talked to Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN) who said he feels today’s “strong turnout will make a difference. Congress will listen.”
There were also chants of “nah nah nah, hey hey hey.” Aimed at Congress, I assume.
AND ANOTHER
Barbara tells me CNN is estimating the crowd at two million, but half that seems more realistic according to other folks on the ground. I’d say CNN (or someone) is gaming the expectations.
Still, that’s a lot of people.
ANOTHER PIC
Again, from Barbara.
It’s clipped off, but the sign on the far right says, “Go Green, Recycle Congress.” Again, I’m really delighted by the truly bipartisan aim to tar and feather.
PICS
Griff Jenkins, arriving in style.
WORKING THE CROWD
Brendan Steinhauser, lead organizer of Freedom Works, is the main speaker right now. He said, “I understand Nancy Pelosi is out of town, but Madam Speaker, if you’re watching on TV, we just replaced replaced the grass on the Mall with astroturf.”
Stacy McCain is reporting all this from backstage right now, although there’s really no telling how he snuck back there.
WORKING THE PHONES
Stacy called in to report on a Navy vet’s sign which read, ” Pelosi Reid & Obama – Three Stooges and Two Boobs.” Although I’m not sure how to do the math on that.
Also, lots of state flags, too, including Colorado, and as far away from DC as Oregon.
More photos on the way from Barbara Espinosa, too.
MORE
There’s at least one unhappy Democrat in the crowd today, too.
FRIENDS?
Could President Obama heal the rift… between economic conservatives and social conservatives? Stacy McCain reports that the two groups are both out in force today, and getting along just fine.
Hit “More” and keep scrolling.
ANOTHER SIGN
Also from Barbara Espinosa, this sign hand-lettered by a Russian immigrant.
OH NO: Stacy McCain called in with a few more tidbits. Lots of “Don’t Tread On Me” flags and a couple signs he found amusing:
Guantanamo: Terrorists Out, Capitalists In?
Waterboard Congress
Finally, a legit use for torture! And I’m amused and gladdened that that second sign wasn’t party-specific. Throw all the bastards out.
EVEN MORE
Remember, click to embiggen.
MORE
UPDATE: Barbara emailed this pic and said, “One of my favorite signs.”
Mine, too.
More updates coming.
ORIGINAL POST BELOW
Just got off the phone with Stacy McCain, who’s trying his damnedest to get into DC for the big TEA Party march today. Stacy was calling in to tell me about his talk with Barbara Espinosa. She’s on the ground at 11th & Pennsylvania Avenue, where they’re metering the crowd. We’re not talking about taking sample counts from a helicopter than extrapolating some dumb figure.
They’re actually counting people.
And as of about noon Eastern, more than 450,000 people had walked by.
And as Stacy can tell you from the traffic, there are more coming in. Many more.
Barbara will have pictures and video in just a bit — check back here for links and/or pics and vids.

Also not part of the huge majority of us. There were fantastic signs, many anti-Obama but many anti-Congress (not just Reid/Pelosi/Frank but ALL of Congress).
There will be many lies about the march and rallies. Not sure how many people but seemed like a million or more. I’ve seen the pics from above. There were 100 porta-potties, not NEARLY enough. Tough to see and hear speakers unless you were close enough to the Capitol building to be in the claustrophobic crush, but it was still fun, lively, very patriotic, very upbeat. All ages, all states as far as I could tell.
It was a great day and we are looking forward to doing it again, bigger but better next year! My family is already revising some strategies. One great idea (either of Freedom Works or Tea Party Patriots – I think the latter) was devoting a big room at the Hyatt Regency all yesterday and last evening to sign-making – tons of fun, inspiring, and full of camraderie. Hundreds participated in that.
Most Washingtonians have been tolerant to amused to very polite and even interested. Only 1 person (an elderly woman) got called a “fascist” that I know of – by a man going by in a cab. Does he even have a clue? Of course not.
It’s really been an extraordinary day, and for some of us a great 3 days starting with the FreedomWorks Liberty caucus at the Armory Thursday. Pics with Jim DeMint – does it get any better!

I have no idea, and since I considered Nodrog something of a pest, bordering on a troll, I never bothered to check.
He galumphed his way over to GoV for a while, and essentially received the same treatment there that he’d gotten when he infested LGF.
Whatever OTHER differences they may have had, it seems that both Lizardoids and GoVers fully agreed that Nodrog was ,at best, a schmuck.

Sep 12, 2009 - 3:23 pm 93. Jackson:I think it’s great that so many people from so many walks of life and POVs have shown up. Amazing!
Can’t deny there are kooks in attendance, but I think the normal, concerned people outnumber them.
I’m not thrilled at the growing influence of Ron Paul, though. He’s a truther and so are many of his supporters. So, the huge cheer for him gives me indigestion.
Charles Johnson is not irrelevant at all. He just has a specific focus that he’s chosen and it goes against a lot of people’s grain. I disagree with him quite a bit, and I think his current rhetoric has been pretty unproductive and somewhat hateful, but I can’t deny that he’s spotlighting some real danger points in the GOP. Intelligent Design, “nirtherism” and Ron Paul’s version of trutherism are not a way toward the future for the party. Once those elements are present there is no way your going to get anyone to listen to the fiscal conservative pitch.
That said, maybe we can stop talking about him and instead talk about the amazing turnout of Americans who are demanding their voices be heard. It’s a pretty exciting day all-in-all. I’m looking forward to seeing more footage as protestors get home to their computers.

As you say, they’re still a drop in the bucket compared to the normal people who showed up. But that doesn’t stop certain fanatics and opportunists from painting this as a Klan convention. Intelligent Design is a lie and the movement’s attempts to break into the science classroom are not innocuous. They are distributing false information and too many people in positions of power are buying into it. I agree with LGF that the GOP is not at all served by its leadership embracing this movement. In fact, it’s one of the worst things they could be doing.
But I totally agree with you that the tone of the disagreement from LGF is completely unproductive. One of the things that seems to upset Johnson so much (understandably, in my opinion) is the false information presented in a scientific manner. People are being skillfully tricked. Who are they going to listen to, though? The guy who ridicules them venomously or the guy who smiles in their faces? Guy #2 is my guess.

Mongoose is doing too much meth. He talks a big game but on election day it’s the numbers that matter. Here are the demographic facts. In 2012 it is estimated the white population will be around 60% and the minority population around 40% (probably more). In many large states the white population is already the minority or hovering at around 50%. The Democrats will easily get upwards of 85% of the minority vote as they have been for quite some time. This isn’t anything new. The GOP will not get the well upwards of (60% to 70%) the white vote needed to overcome that statistical imbalance. So unless they have a real plan on cutting into the minority vote, and by that I mean ’specific’ legislative proposals that would attract them to the GOP as supportive voters, it’s hard to see how they make up the difference. The only other thing the conservatives can do is increase their numbers and that isn’t happening (by that I mean reproducing).
The GOP hasn’t learned that in our demographically shifting nation you can no longer win elections with old white conservatives any more. Why? They’re dying off. In fact, looking at many of the D.C. rally participants today I’d be surprised if they’re still with us in a few years. The Democrats know this. All they have to do is just sit and wait while they die off one by one. The conservatives by contrast whistle by the graveyard of their former constituents without realizing it.

The Intelligent Design movement has been dishonest in their materials. There is nothing scientifically provable about what they’re trying to teach, so they’ve made stuff up.
As a Christian — born again, mind you — I have no problem with the scientifically founded theory of evolution living side by side with my faith in God as the Creator. I will never demand that He fit Himself into the parameters of human scientific study. Or that He allow Himself to be proven to me or anyone else in any human terms.
Look at it this way: if the Creator could be proven, then there would be no need for faith.
The Intelligent Design movement is a big loser for the GOP. Huge. And I also happen to think it’s a big loser for Christians. “False prophets” are pushing it, IMO.

LGF constantly demands the respect that they do not offer those that they disagree with.
I say that it is the LGF “conservative” types that give the Conservative movement such a bad name.
I have no beef with either Evolutionist or Creationist, but LGF spews a lot of hate against Creationists and INtelligent Design believers.
You can’t have radicals from either spectrum running the Conservative movement. LGF has become a radical website. Most of the comments there are no different than the comments you read from Liberals from DailyKos, DemocraticUnderground, Huffington Post, etc, etc.

Sep 12, 2009 - 7:29 pm 140. Rashputin:“I say that it is the LGF “conservative” types that give the Conservative movement such a bad name.”
LGF as well as some individuals (George Will comes to mind) only call themselves conservative in order to be quoted as such by liberals. They’re the “acceptable” conservatives, which actually means fifth columnists. All those folks are in total agreement with the left on the most basic thing, that an elite should rule and that they are the elite. Other than that, they do disagree on tatctics, not on objectives.
Keeping the conservatives fighting among themselves has been their goal for years and they’ve been rewarded by having the old media and liberals recognize them. I hope thier fifth column work is finally being recognized for what it is and will stop working.

Stephen, exactly.
A bit of old history here. When the “Million Man March” occurred. The Center for Remote Sensing department at BU (Doctor Farouk El-Baz) was where satellite imagery was analyzed to determine that there was not a million people present at any one time (though it perhaps achieved that target in total participants throughout the event). This was the basis for bitter controversy by march organizers, claiming racism in this determination (ironic, as Doctor El-Baz is from Egypt).
As you imply, it’s a curiously similar situation, but played differently in the press.

Sep 12, 2009 - 9:21 pm 162. adam:Todaywas a great day, but Mark Steyn’s sense that Obama is determined to ram some version of the public option through regardless should be take very seriously. Obviously, if he can convince, bribe and blackmail enough Democrats he can do so. It has been made clear that in doing so, he thumbs his nose at a majority of Americans, so he (and the Democrats) will be telling us they don’t care. They must assume that getting this through will effect irreversible changes in the body politics (again, as Steyn argues). How could we then prove them wrong? Let’s say they pass the legislation? What kinds of politics would be possible then? Civil disobedience? In what forms?

Sep 12, 2009 - 9:35 pm 165. Samizdat:I have watched todays events in DC and elsewhere from afar after attending two different TEA partys this spring.
It is possible that the economy may turn and expand robustly with millions of the unemployed being reemployed prior to the 2010 midterm elections. It is possible that the President may perform an about face, signal the Democrat Congress to withdraw Cap and Tax and Obamacare, and pull a Clinton triangulation. Possible, but highly unlikely.
My 13 year old son told me that at his school, where last year he was one of two anti Obama votes in his class of 28, he now knows of 10 kids who are anti Obama. Once considered a pariah, he is now running for an officers position in school government.
I realize that this info is ancedotal and unscientific. Still, it seems apparent that the liberal agenda is meeting increasing resistance with each passing day. Americans are waking up. Children are reflecting what they are hearing at home. Democrat behavior is defensive and nervous. There is much graveyard whistling in the wind.
As events in Washington today show this story is far from over. The American people are beginning to find their voice. That ain’t good for liberals.

Here are the demographic facts. In 2012 it is estimated the white population will be around 60% and the minority population around 40% (probably more)….
The Census Bureau disagrees
“Projections of the Population by Race and Hispanic Origin for the United States: 2008 to 2050,” the bureau forecasts a rise in the number of whites from about 243 million today to 325 million at midcentury – an increase of 82 million. A related spreadsheet gives the percentages: Whites today account for nearly 80 percent of the US population. In 2050, they’ll constitute 74 percent.
Put down the bong Praetorian.”
Good try. The problem with your analysis is that you have read the data wrong. With the white birth rate declining and the white population greying their numbers are not increasing relative to their minority counterparts. Minorities, especially hispanics, are reproducing in greater numbers than their white counterparts. As time goes on whites will become a smaller percentage of the population not greater as you suggest. Please provide a link that states the white population is increasing in greater numbers than that of non-whites and will get larger over time relative to non whites.
Sep 12, 2009 - 11:49 pm 177. Praetorian:For Tolbert (#146)
Hispanic-origin population will probably be a major element of the total population growth “45 percent from 2010 to 2030, and 60 percent from 2030 to 2050.
Non-hispanic Whites will “decrease to 23 percent between 2000 and 2010, and 14 percent from 2010 to 2030. The non-Hispanic White population would contribute nothing to population growth after 2030 because it would be declining in size.”
Interpretation: Whites are decreasing. Non-Whites are increasing. Doom for conservatives.

He’s also assuming that voting patterns will remain constant. You’re projecting 40 years into the future and assuming that blacks and Hispanics will still be part of the underclass and will continue to vote Dem.
Of course, if the Dems continue to win elections, minorities will indeed be stuck in the ghettos and barrios. That’s exactly where liberals want them – poor, uneducated and dependent on handouts.
But perhaps by the time 2050 rolls around, enough Hispanics and blacks will have realized the Dems have been playing them for fools and that general economic prosperity is in their best interest.
Who knows? But only a fool would assume that conditions, viewpoints and party affiliations will remain the same.

Sep 13, 2009 - 2:19 am 187. Larry G.:How sad for hard left social engineers like “Praetorian” that they think they think the ideals of conservatism – personal liberty, minimal government intrusion into daily life, and strict adherence to the Constitution – only appeal to their hated enemies – Americans of European descent. They throw these projected yet unproven future demographics about like a victory, assuming that their future subjects are all going to be swarthy peasants too primitive too moronic to even understand the concepts that led them to our shores in the first place. They will accept the hard left “progressive” agenda hook, line and sinker because it is just the right thing for these people.
Far left radicals like “Praetorian” use race and ethnicity as a weapon,(ironically when they have no legitimate reason to do so) based on their own supposed background, and even if they do fall into one of their own established “victim” classes, they presume to speak for EACH and EVERY member of said “oppressed” category.
I attended the Fort Lauderdale Freedom Rally today and I took hundreds of names/emails and asked for donations from the attendants for our group. I am not one to keep a headcount of nit-picky demographics, but I can assure you that in addition to the Left’s hated White Christians, there were plenty of “others” that a cherry-picking leftist might consider to be of Cuban, Venezuelan, Filipino, Peruvian or perhaps other descent.
I do not know because I was not taking the census. I was asking for contact info of people that are interested in activism for retaining and enhancing our personal liberty. That may not meet the “diversity” needs of someone like “Praetorian”, but I suspect that he/she/it cares much less about quotas than pinpointing and attacking a particular demographic – Christians of European descent.

Hush, child. It will be over soon.
Sep 13, 2009 - 7:02 pm 210. BC:To myth buster: Oh I see, you guys don’t understand the concept of “lying” versus reporting an estimate in good faith that then turns up awry. Let’s see if I can clarify the difference. Let’s first take the example of Bush: during the months leading up to the invasion of Iraq, pretty much all of the good intel he was receiving was showing that there was no evidence for either an active WMD program nor ties to al-Qaeda regarding, nor was there any real reason to suspect Hussein as being any sort of real threat to the US. However publicly Bush and his people said just the opposite. That’s lying, pronounced “lie – ing”.
In Obama’s case, he had a whole bunch of economic advisers tell him that the stimulus bill *should* stave off unemployment rising above 8%, although the details overall were rather complex. (Don’t I have bestest of links?) These estimates turned out to be off by a couple of percentage points. Did he misrepresent or miscategorized the best info he had in hand, as Bush did? No. Did Obama have a crystal ball showing him that estimates of the experts would be off like this? No.
What if your boss asked you to get an estimate for repairing a leaky office toilet, so you contact some plumbers to get estimates, report the results to your boss, but the final bill ends up being more than the estimate because the plumbing behind the wall was worse than anticipated — does that make you a liar? What if your boss accuses you of being a liar nevertheless — what does that make him?
So does reporting the estimates of the experts make Obama a liar when those estimates turn out to overly optimistic? If not, then what does that make the people accusing him of such?
Sep 13, 2009 - 7:34 pm 211. AtheistConservative:“Let’s first take the example of Bush: during the months leading up to the invasion of Iraq, pretty much all of the good intel he was receiving was showing that there was no evidence for either an active WMD program nor ties to al-Qaeda regarding, nor was there any real reason to suspect Hussein as being any sort of real threat to the US.”
You know, that IS a good example of lying – on your part.
“In Obama’s case, he had a whole bunch of economic advisers tell him that the stimulus bill *should* stave off unemployment rising above 8%”
Yet another great example of your lying. Numerous economists were very vocal about the fact that ’stimulus’ wasn’t going to fix anything. He ignored them because it wasn’t what he wanted to hear.
Of course, your whole premise is based on a lie – that the ’stimulus’ had anything to do with creating or saving jobs. It was all crony payments, slush funds, and pet projects. Which is why it didn’t work.
How does it feel being deluded? Seriously. You will not believe the truth that is right in front of your eyes. Are you in love with Obama? You can admit it, it’s okay nowadays. Just tell us that you love him and your bizarre fetish fantasies make it impossible for you to objectively evaluate him. We can get you help.

Please hold your breath until that happens. Promises, promises.
Be sure to tell these folks if he ever actually keeps one of those promiese. It’ll come as a pleasant surprise, since they’ve already realized that BHO and the left have hung the gay community out to dry:

Sep 13, 2009 - 8:10 pm 214. goy:@211. BC: – Did you click on that PDF link I included…
I did.
– check the date on it,
January, 2009 – right before the Spendulus was rammed through Congress before anyone actually had time to read it carefully, and a point in time where all of the economic indicators clear.
– where it came from,
Oh yes. Check it yourself. It came from the “Council of Economic Advisors”, headed by Christina Romer – one of the minions BHO selected to tell him what he wanted to hear before he even took office. The report was issued by the “The Office of the Vice President Elect” – a bogus, made-up office that had no business commissioning anything, since Biden had yet to take office. Romer is a wack-job from Berkeley who’s been sucking down a paycheck in the bubble of academia all her adult life and who has never actually held a real job. She lost her appointment to Harvard because of her idiotic, socialist economic theories and her failure to understand the causes and exacerbating factors of the Great Depression. No President with any executive experience – “elect” or otherwise – would believe anything an ideologue like Romer had to say about predicting the economy. That much has been proven.
Using those predictions to justify the largest government spending increase in all of recorded history demonstrates how truly bad BHO’s judgment really is. BHO didn’t “lie” when he asserted that the Spendulus would keep unemployment to 9%, he lied when he said we should have any confidence whatsoever in those predictions.

That’s tough — you have extremely well-educated, knowledgeable people who use facts and research to come to conclusions and back up their opinions, and opposing them are loud, dumb ignoramuses. Who should to believe…hmmm….
Sep 13, 2009 - 10:40 pm 220. BC:To David W. Lincoln: Ummm, that’s not about the economy — that that’s about there being problems still with the banking system, namely the size of the banks:
“In the U.S. and many other countries, the too-big-to-fail banks have become even bigger,” Stiglitz said in an interview today in Paris. “The problems are worse than they were in 2007 before the crisis.”
I don’t now is the best time to start breaking up oversized banks into more manageable chunks. There will be time later for that….
Sep 13, 2009 - 10:46 pm 221. goy:BC, next year, when you drop out of high school and have to go find a real job, and the unemployment rate is 15% because the “extremely well-educated, knowledgeable people” told BHO what he said he wanted to hear, you’ll find out how utterly delusional you are.
BHO has never held a real job. His head economic adviser has never had a real job, and has demonstrated complete ignorance of how taxes, depressions and recessions function – so complete that Harvard refused to hire her. And it’s likely that YOU will never have a real job because these people and their ilk are actively destroying the economy so they can build a new corporatist state from the ashes.
Your commie bullshit always has the same ending: mass murder and economic collapse. In part, that’s caused by willfully blind, suicidally gullible individuals just like you.

Perhaps it takes a male understanding, there are 3 people portrayed, all of whom are stooges. One of the stooges is female, and presumably has 2 breasts, or boobs. Pretty simple really.
Sep 14, 2009 - 8:21 am 225. goy:@220. Now and Then: – I say ODT and DOMA are goners.
All evidence to the contrary.
- You say they’re not.
Heheheh… that’s YOUR fantasy.
I observe that BHO has taken no direct action regarding DOMA or DODT, let alone repealed either one. That is documented fact.
I observe that elements of the gay community are calling foul as a result, and that THEY don’t expect this President or this Congress to follow through on their promises. That is also documented fact (just follow the link – and go place a bet with THEM if you’re so anxious to give away your money).
I couldn’t care less what happens with either issue, so you’re only betting against yourself. As usual, you can’t post without lying and false bravado – right in line with your fantasy that you ever served in the military.
But speaking of BHO’s “say anything” campaign rhetoric, I see that Osama is laughing from beyond the grave at BHO’s pathetic inability to live up to his promises regarding withdrawal from Iraq.
