A Slap in the Face

Chicago got knocked off in the first round of IOC voting.

President Obama’s tough, direct negotiations in Denmark don’t seem to have saved or created any votes for his hometown.

UPDATE: “What a waste.”

I’m from here and I LOVE IT!

So, the committee felt “pressured?”

They couldn’t see The One greatness?

The peons didn’t bend to his will?

Wonder how the narcissist will take that international slap?

In all fairness, tho, when I heard Rio – I thought they’d get it. We’ll see.

I thought we had a good chance up until then.

All those $ they can’t steal….

It’s Bush’s fault. But there’s still hope for the special olympics, especially if they add bowling!

This is indeed a slap in the face — to the arrogant Obama camp.

All I can say can be borrowed from Nelson Muntz: HA-ha!

Chicagoans deserved better.

Barack Obama has severely damaged his standing in the world. I said over two months ago that he has probably become a marginalized figure unable to pass any serious legislation in Congress. He will resign his office in less than a year. Obama may also very well experience a mental breakdown.

Oct 2, 2009 - 10:04 am 8. snarkandboobs:

Wait…. did they vote on the Olympics? Or the Olympics-Olympics?

I have to know before I can snicker whole-heartedly.

I think its a little unfair to blame Obama for this. There are plenty of legitimate arguements about the timing being wrong for Chicago: recent US games, recent anglo games, financially not being primed for a vanity outlay. Assuming Rio can address the crime problems, they are by far the best candidate, and they have the most to gain. I don’t think there was anything anyone could do to get these games landed in the US (outside of bribing the notoriously corrupt IOC members, another reason for them to avoid US games). I do think this casts some of his followers, especially those in the media, in a poor light. All those that still somehow believe his personal charisma is going to trump the best interest of others.

The same thing happened in Copenhagen as happened at every other interntational event. Every leader listened respectfully, cheered the speech, remarked how beautiful Michelle looked, commented on how refreshing Barrack’s vision is… then they immediatly do exactly what they were going to do in the first place. Whether its Iran, export strategies or the Olympics, Obama’s disciples don’t seem to understand that no foreign leader is beholden to Obama’s “Vision of the Future”(tm).

Oct 2, 2009 - 10:20 am 12. David S:

Anybody who was following this story is not surprised at this point. I think it’s completely idiotic to blame Obama for the IOC’s decision – his advocacy was a minor factor in the bid.

Peace.

Well, at least it wasn’t a total loss. The Great Wee Wee got to meet his commanding general for 25 minutes. I wonder how much time Lincoln spent conferring with Grant?

Whether or not Dear Liar’s personal appeal swayed anyone, The President of the United States of America does not do this sort of thing. He’s supposed to be the leader of the free world, not a political hack trying to bring home the bacon for his hometown. Now The One just looks impotent on the world stage.

Of course the President isn’t to blame. But he did receive a slap to the face — by putting his face where it didn’t need to be. This is the reason US presidents don’t get directly involved in the IOC selection process.

If a city loses, a city loses — three cities lose the Summer Games every four years, as do many other cities which tried but couldn’t even get considered. But when the President (or Prime Minister, whatever) shows up, then he puts his nation’s prestige on the line. That gamble paid off for Tony Blair four years ago.

How’d it work out for Obama?

Oct 2, 2009 - 10:30 am 19. Stephen Green:

RBJ –

Thanks for making my point, and in far fewer words!

Oct 2, 2009 - 10:32 am 20. Jack:

Blame Obama?

That’s missing the point.

It’s not that Obama specifically caused Chicago to be knocked out (unless the IOC saw a big chance to say… slap someone in the face), it’s that Chicago was knocked out despite of the President’s very high profile efforts.

Hence, Dave, why Green called it a slap in the face, instead of blaming Obama.

Granted, Obama probably should have been wiser on his negotiations and made sure he actually had a deal before going out on a limb like this, but as Rich Lowry says:

“We Can Take Some Comfort in this distressing hour that the Iranians, Russians, Chinese et al. are push-overs compared to the International Olympic Committee. Right?”

The Corner has a bunch of posts to this effect.
http://corner.nationalreview.com./

Again Lowry: “From a GOP political hand: ‘It’s not a big thing, it might not even move his poll numbers, but in the back of people’s minds it will create the idea that maybe he’s not the silver-tongued convincer-in-chief everyone says he is.’ “

IF Chicago had been awarded it, it would have been worse. Because it would have seemed they once, again, bowed to the US.

IF it would be possible for the perception of our reputation to get worse, this would help it.

Oct 2, 2009 - 10:43 am 24. eburchelli:

They negotiated as victims. And they thought that would sway a more intelligent crowd than US liberals. What I’ve seen from the liberal bloggers so far is the blame game, ie: The IOC is made up of Europeans. As if that is a reason for not picking any other area of the world than their own. I wonder when the race card will show up?

Oct 2, 2009 - 10:48 am 25. AThinkingPerson:

Obama got SLAPPED on the world stage. No way to candy coat what happened.

The Olympians will be better served in Rio than Obama’s thug epicenter of Chicago. Now I might actually watch them.

Sorry libtards, no soap.

Your attempts to downplay your interest in your messiah’s sealing up an Olympic bid doesn’t wash. I’ll state the obvious that, if Bush personally lobbied for the same thing with the same result, you’d all be swinging from the rafters, twirling party favors, screaming at the top of your lungs. Spin, understate, deny and repeat.

Now who’s to blame? Expending precious political capital for something that should be waaaaay down on the priority list, if not off of it entirely.

Wither poor, Narcissius……

Oct 2, 2009 - 11:22 am 33. Dave M.:

RACISM plain and simple. There is no other explanation for this. The bigots in Copenhagen can not abide by the fact that the United States has a black president. The U.S. delegation included the President, the First Lady, and Oprah. What do all three have in common? That’s right, they are black. I only thought we were racist here in America. Can’t we all just get along?
