A fluid dynamics question from the peanut gallery...

So with the speed of this thing at 16 mph or so do sheering effects in any way impact the storm's ability to reorganize itself?

It seems that maybe with the dry air coming in from the west and leading edge having trouble reconstituting a clean shape that that may work against reintensification.

Or maybe not. Any comment?

And yet the radar loops show that precip continues to decline around the storm. It appears to me from the early morning IR sat images that Gustav has swallowed some cold air, something pretty common in very intense storms, one of the main reasons they don't stay intense very long. It's currrently directly over the Loop Current but seem to continue to weaken. Good news, I hope.

A mandatory evacuation has finally been called for my area. I am on the cusp, literally blocks from the dividing line, so I am not leaving. I am on a second floor and went through Katrina so I am not concerned about wind.

Plus, the roads are now packed with main roads out as slow as 5 mph.

The "mother of all storms" has had its effect.
